The Widow with Two Mites

Psalm 51:17 “The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit, a broken and a contrite heart” The common word used for sacrifice is ‘Korban’ in Hebrew. The word doesn’t actually mean giving up something but ‘drawing near’ or ‘coming closer’. Yes, sacrifices were meant to bring us closer to God! There are many instances of sacrifices in the bible, the greatest of all is what Jesus did on the Cross. Let’s discuss of two instances – the woman who brought fragrant oil in an alabaster flask. The bible records that she anointed the feet of Jesus and wiped His feet with her hair (Mk 14:3-9 & Jn 12:3-8). Though her act was condemned by His disciples, the God of sacrifice applauded her saying her act would be remembered whenever the gospel is preached. According to Jewish tradition, the fragrant oil in the alabaster flask was a treasure given to an unmarried woman by her parents. The woman would break it at the feet of the man whom she wishes to marry as a confirmation of her consent. So, this woman was representing the bride (church) demonstrating the love for her Bridegroom. Out her love, she let go her ‘crowning glory’ – her hair at His feet – what a standard set before us! And the result, the fragrance filled the entire room…a pleasing aroma unto Him. Next, the poor widow who put two mites into the treasury (Mk 12:42-44). Again, we can read that Jesus appreciated her saying “she, out of her poverty put in all that she had…” This demonstrates sacrificial giving, the woman gave all she had and the best part is, Jesus saw her heart. We can see that Jesus was so glad to acknowledge the works of these two women more so because they reflected His character! Now, are we ready to let go all that we hold on to demonstrate our love towards Jesus & to lay our crowns at His feet? Are we ready to love our Lord with all that we have? Is our sacrifice (our time, efforts & relationship), a pleasing aroma & drawing us close to Him? Let’s examine ourselves. -Reena Thomas
